Here's another selection of images of those hardy souls that ventured underwater in a canvas suit topped with a brass helmet!
We start with a wonderful piece of original artwork. Unlike the other examples here, this one is unusual in that it features the diver using a rebreather rather than his air being supplied from the surface.
This piece was discovered at a car boot sale by Jamie Francis who has kindly allowed me to share it here. The artist is unknown but the initials VHC (or possibly VHG) have been blacked out at bottom left. Anyone have any thoughts as to who the artist might be?
Still on a humorous theme we have this Bunion strip by George Martin.
George Martin (1928-2011) is known primarily for his work for D.C. Thomson, in particular The Dandy (Greedy Pigg, Desperate Dawg), The Topper (Captain Bungle, Julius Cheeser, Send for Kelly) and The Beezer (The Hillys and the Billys, Young Sid the Copper's Kid and Black Bun) to name but a few. He also produced the "silent" newspaper strip Bunion which was widely syndicated in the UK and internationally.
This edition of Bluebook magazine is dated June 1953.
I've seen it attributed to both John Walter Scott (aka John Walters) and Julian Block, neither of which I've been able to confirm.
This feature is from Look and Learn issue 395, published in August 1969. Art by Angus McBride.
Angus McBride (1931-2007) was born in London to Scottish parents, both of whom died when he was young. He lost his mother when he was only five and his father died when was 12. Educated in Canterbury, he did his national service with the Royal Fusiliers.
After spending some time in South Africa, he returned to England in 1961. Initially working for various educational magazines throughout the 1960s, in 1975 he began working on Osprey Publishing's Men-at-Arms series. Moving back to Cape Town, he continued to produce military and historical illustrations for various publishers. He also produced artwork for role-playing games based on the works of Tolkien.
He moved to Ireland in 2006 where died of a heart attack in 2007.
You can see more of his work here
Finally, here's a Valiant cover by Mike Western.
Did you get it right?!
